Ian was the first of a number of Australians to train at the Newark School of Violin Making in England, with his training beginning in September, 1974. A violin made by him won a silver medal at the 1976 Cremona Triennale. He graduated from Newark "with distinction" in 1977, and continued to work and study in the UK until his return to Australia in 1981. He was grateful to receive an Australia Council award towards the establishment of his workshop at Biddeston. Throughout his career his primary concentration has been on the crafting of new instruments, many of which have found homes in Australia, the UK, Europe, and North America.
